Celebrity status in the north west

For the last few weeks we've been staying with Sabrina's mum in Nordenham. I've managed to see plenty of this little village including the annual town festival and visit numerous places in the surrounding area.

This part of Germany is about a five hour drive north west of Berlin. It's extremely green out this way and very, very quiet.

Nordenham feels like half the town folk have left. The neighbourhood streets are usually empty and the city streets have a scattering of people at most. The pubs on a Friday night are the same and only contain a handful of patrons. Yet there is everything here that you could ask for or need. Well almost.

It's like one huge retirement village and I say that with a smile. Every garden is magnificently manicured and everything is in its place. Nothing is out of order.

Oldenburg is a bigger city in size and population to Nordenham and is about a 45 minute drive. It's one of those places that has a soft ambience and conservative architecture. A nice place to visit.

Bremerhaven is a quick ferry ride form Nordenham and only slightly larger. It's main attraction is it's maritime history and water front. Like the other two places it has the typical mall and pedestrian areas dotted with cafes and restaurants.

Bremen is cool. My kind of city. It takes about an hour to drive there from Nordenham. It's historical buildings in the city are beautiful and help create a wonderful public space. It's streets are filled with alternative retail shops and cafes.

On a different note, one day we had a visit from a journalist representing the local newspaper. She was keen to write an article about how the journey is constructed and came to be, some about the history and what's the plan for the future. The conversation was mainly in German and she took heaps of notes. I wasn't too sure how it would turn out. As it happened the article was bigger than I thought it would be and pretty accurate. Some things were a little lost in translation and there were a few lines repeated but overall not too bad. It was fun and another thing to add to the DONE list.
