There is no rail network in this part of the Peleponesse and the buses are few and far between. So it was time to hire another car.

Monemvasia is about 3.5 hours drive south from Nafplio. It's at the southern tip of the Peleponesse.

The first part of the journey from Nafplio to Tripoli required me to drive along a road with heaps of twists and turns and hairpin corners through the mountains. For those who know the west coast of Tasmania it's like driving through Lake Burbury but on steroids. It lasts for ages and is magnificent. For those who don't know this area, picture granite mountains and hills with cut outs and cliffs providing a view of other hills, mountains and olive plantations that seem to go on forever. I forgot to take photos so here is one I borrowed thanks to theshepherdandtheolivetree.com

I should also mention that the GPS died after about 10 minutes into the journey so I had to resort to old school navigation by reading a map and road signs.

The road trip was an experience in itself. So many little towns. So much to look at. So close to getting lost but didn't 😉

Just before I arrived at my 'seaside residence' I picked up my second hitchhiker. Sabrina, like minded and great company. Well not really a hitchhiker but she wanted to know where Villa Douka Appartments were. I didn't know either but it just so happened that's where I was staying as well so off we went.

Monemvasia is a beautiful and very small and peaceful town. The old town is actually a town inside fortifications in what I can only describe as a massive rock. More about that later.
