Portugal -TaviraSimon ClementsSep 13, 20161 min read Tavira is a small town on the Portuguese coast in the far south. Originally established as a fishing village it is now operating as a tourist destination for those seeking the sun and beaches. It is especially popular with the British. The town itself is very pretty to look with its white buildings and placid river that runs through it from the Atlantic. There are plenty of places to eat and drink. Interestingly though there is not as much local food as I would like and too many Indian restaurants. I'm assuming the latter is catering to the British. The guest house I stayed in called Formosa is really cool. The hosts are very accommodating and friendly. In the common rooms they provide wine and other treats using a money box and an honour system. I'm here in the peak tourist season and its typically hot. Around 35 deg. Given that, and the cities charm, scenery, proximity to the beach and its history you would think that it's very busy and over run with tourists. It's not. Quite the opposite. It's sleepy, chilled and slow paced. There is little to no traffic and a comfortable amount of tourists. Again mostly British. Disspointingly the town has sold its indigenous culture for the tourist dollar.SMLXL
